Shadow Dancer

Shadow Dancer

Iridescent night
In your eyes,
Sparks
Of infinity
And passion,
Inebriated by power
Your voice floats
Through darkness
Until your eternal lips
Take
What – since the beginning of time –
Has been theirs.

In 1992, shortly after its world premiere, I saw Elisabeth, which was soon to become my favourite musical, ever. When I studied in Vienna the following year, I saw it about ten times, and a part of me began hoping to, perhaps, one day sing the title role. Well, fate was of a different opinion. But this magnificent piece of musical theatre has remained imbedded in my soul ever since.
I fell in love with the premiere cast and haven’t watched the musical since. But now, the 20th anniversary tour called out me… and I will see it again, very soon – and undoubtedly write about it here.
Intoxicated by the music of Elisabeth which I listened to yesterday, practically all day, singing along, I couldn’t get the male lead out of my head. Death. The most seductive character in musical theatre. Well, to me he is. And this poem had to be written. Enjoy.
